Narrated Musical Pieces for
Young Audiences and Families
In the Land of Sound, you will find a town where all the instruments of the orchestra live. It is called Instrument Village. There are no people there and so the instruments do everything with their music, from weaving tapestries to playing volleyball. The narration guides the listeners to all the wondrous things these instruments can do in fantastic adventures.
The Roaring Mountain: (30 minutes) In this escapade the instruments travel across the Land of Sound to discover the source of the roar from the mountain and stop it. The piece incorporates a full orchestra and was commissioned by and premiered with The New York Philharmonic at The Young Peoples Concert (YPC) in April 2005.
The Architecture Series: Descriptive stories of new buildings going up in Instrument Village incorporate period musical styles with the architecture. The series has accompanying visuals created by illustrator John Hutton. Each piece is approximately 12- 15 minutes long. When performed as one piece in four sections it runs approximately 45 minutes. Instruments: Bass, Cello, Violin, Viola, Oboe, Trumpet, Percussion and Narrator.

The Volleyball Game: (7 – 10 minutes) The instruments take a concert break and go to the park for a volleyball game. For Bass, Xylophone, Trumpet, Oboe and Narrator. Premiered at KIDZONE YPC, Avery Fisher Hall, Spring, 2006.
Quiet Down Up There! (8 – 10 minutes) This Instrument Village story describes Percussion trying to get a good night’s rest up on Woodwind Hill only to be awakened by Bass and Bassoon dancing upstairs. For Bass, Bassoon, Percussion and Narrator. Premiered at the Bravo Vail Music Festival, Summer, 2007.
The Story of the Lost Voice (7 -10 minutes) In this piece the sound of a lost voice is heard in Instrument Village. Big Bass and Flute befriend the little voice and carry it from the Land of Sound back to the Land of People where a very distressed Soprano welcomes the return of her voice. For Soprano, Bass, Flute and Narrator. Premiered at KIDZONE, YPC Fall, 2007.
Big Bass Just Making Music (7 – 10 minutes). Big Bass tires of always using his music to do things around Instrument Village, so he leaves town for the afternoon. He settles in on a hill where the far-away sounds of Instruments at work and play become the background for his own peaceful reverie. For Bass, Clarinet, Violin, Trumpet and Narrator. Premiered at KIDZONE, YPC Spring, 2008.
Instrument Village: The Camping Trip will be performed as part of the Bravo Music Festival/NY Philharmonic’s outreach program in Vail, Colorado on July 23rd and 24th 2008. This latest episode describing life in and around Instrument Village where the Instruments do everything from sleeping to painting to playing volleyball with their music will include score by Jon Deak and libretto and narration by Bill Gordh. “The Camping Trip” will also feature new works composed by very young composers from the Vail Valley who will workshop with Deak and Gordh during the Philharmonic’s annual residency in Vail. Instrument Village: The Camping Trip will be performed by New York Philharmonic Musicians Kim Laskowski on bassoon, Mindy Kaufman playing flute, Joe Pereira on percussion and Jon Deak on bass. Bill Gordh will narrate.
Instrument Village: The New York Adventure with young composers Adam Bernstein, Kai Lovelace, Nathan Mannes and Farah Taslima
For: Accordion, Bass, Clarinet, Flute, Viola, Violin, Trumpet, Percussion, Trumpet and Narrator. Some of the instruments from Instrument Village tour New York City with new compositions by young composers to describe their adventures. Premiered at KIDZONE, YPC Fall, 2008.
Instrument Village Goes to Paris: An Afternoon Soiree at the Eiffel Tower. The new work will feature music by special guest composer Victoria Bond and young composers Vincent Wilmet and Jade Aubertin as well as by Philharmonic member Jon Deak and libretto and narration by Bill Gordh. This is the 12th collaboration in their on-going narrated series about Instrument Village, where all the instruments of the orchestra live. In addition to bass, bass clarinet, clarinet and percussion, the soiree includes banjo and two Chinese instruments - the pipa and erhu. performed at KIDZONE as part of the Nov. 22nd 2008 New York Philharmonic’s Young Peoples Concert at Avery Fisher Hall.
Instrument Village in Mozart’s Vienna: An Adventure in Sonata-Allegro Form This piece featured new compositions by young composers (Ages 10 – 13) from the newly created Bridge Program. As the sonata – allegro form is considered essential to the understanding of music from Vienna in Mozart’s time, we have created a narrative that the young composers are writing for that will follow this form. The young composers include Adam Bernstein, Noah Jimenez, Lucas McGill, Ben Ramos, Farah Taslima and Olivia Turano. The musicians include Jon Deak on Bass, Michelle Farah on Oboe, Thomas Jöstlein on Horn and Anna Rabinova on violin. The piece was be narrated by Bill Gordh. performed at KIDZONE as part of the March 28th 2009 New York Philharmonic’s Young Peoples Concert at Avery Fisher Hall.
The Young Composers in Instrument Village: Strolling to an Exhibition . This piece featured new compositions by young composers (Ages 10 – 13) from the newly created Bridge Program. Inspired by Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition”, these composers have worked from artwork, fables by Ivan Krylov, a Russian legend and even the October revolution. The young composers include Jade Aubertin, Benjamin Banker, Isabel DeLuca, Rajon Herbert, Nathan Mannes, Zephyr Peck, Abraham Pagan and Matteusz Sloszkiewicz. . The musicians include Pascual Martinez Forteza (Clarinet), Thomas Smith (Trumpet), Jon Deak (Bass), Hannah Lachert (Violin), and Sean Rittenaur (Percussion). The piece was narrated by Bill Gordh. Performed at KIDZONE as part of the May 2nd 2009 New York Philharmonic’s Young Peoples Concert at Avery Fisher Hall.
Instrument Village: The Haunted House was performed as part of the Bravo Music Festival/NY Philharmonic’s outreach program in Vail, Colorado on July 29th and 30th 2009. This latest episode describing an adventure in the house outside the Village haunted by the spirit of the 19th century instrument, the opheiclide featured new works composed by ten of the The Very Young Composers of Eagle County. Deak and Gordh served as mentors in a series of workshops preceding the concerts during the Philharmonic’s annual residency in Vail in summer 2009.
The Young Composers in Instrument Village: The Instruments' Guide to Young People. The young composers Adam Bernstein, Noah Jimenez, Lucas McGil, Ben Myers and Olivia Turano with Composition Mentor/Composer James Blachly created new works that had the instruments describing young people including "The Sibling Series". The musicians include Collaborator/Very Young Composers Founder Jon Deak on Bass, Peter Kenote on Violin/viola, Michelle Farah on Oboe and Dave Mancuso on percussion. The Young Composers in Instrument Village: A Journey Across the Land of Sound. For this adventure, music was composed by the young composers Izzy DeLuca, Aaron Henry, Abraham Pagan, Katya Turchin and Vincent Wilmet with Composition Mentor/Composer Daniel Felsenfeld to describe The Land of Sound that surrounds Instrument Village. The musicians include Collaborator/Very Young Composers Founder Jon Deak on Bass, Kathy Greene on Viola, Richard Mannoia on Clarinet, Sean Rittenauer on Percussion and Tom Smith on Trumpet. The piece was narrated by Bill Gordh. Performed at KIDZONE as part of the Dec 2009 New York Philharmonic’s Young Peoples Concert at Avery Fisher Hall.
The Young Composers in Instrument Village: The Think Tank. The young composers had their own think tank to come up with the agenda for this piece. The pieces elaborated on an Instrument Think Tank session in the village. Composers are Jade Aubertin, Rajon Herbert, Nathan Manes and Zephyr Peck. The musicians include Collaborator/Very Young Composers Founder Jon Deak on Bass, Peter Kenote on Viola, Richard Mannoia on Clarinet, Sean Rittenauer on Percussion and Howard Wall on French Horn.The piece was narrated by Bill Gordh who also played banjo. The Young Composers in Instrument Village: The Rumor. The young composers took a 4 note phrase from Mozart's Jupiter Symphony and built a series of short pieces to spread the rumor. The composers Ryan Cortina, Ian Goldstein, Isabelle Hasslund, Bo Henry and Sophie Millar contributed individual works.
